The premier league remains the most popular football league in the world, attracting hundreds of millions of followers globally.

This is evidenced by the recent ground-breaking deal the league signed with broadcast companies (Sky and BT), worth about £8 billion, to broadcast live premier league games, in addition to other deals with international broadcast companies.

The fantasy premier league game is also increasingly popular amongst fans around the world since its inception in 2002, with the 2016/2017 season recording over 3.8 million participants. The popularity exploded and continues to increase due to the evolution of the internet

The fantasy game has also become increasingly popular amongst the massive number of people that follow the English Premier League in Nigeria.
THE FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE

WHAT IT IS?
The Fantasy premier league is a fan based game that runs concurrently with the English premier league season. The game started in 2002 and has grown to become the most popular fantasy game of the most popular football league in the world, amassing just under 4 million users for the 2016/17 season.

It basically involves fans creating a virtual team of real players, under a virtual budget, with the players in turn scoring points based on performances each week. A user with the most points accrued by the selected players is the eventual winner of the game.

There are global leagues which users are automatically a part of based on their country, as well as favourite club in the league.
SELECTING A SQUAD
Each team is allocated a virtual budget of £100m to spend on up to 15 players, who have virtual costs ranging from £4m to up to £13m. it should be noted that this virtual cost, is in no way related to the actual transfer value of these players in real life. It is after all, a game based on fantasies.
Each user can select up to:
2 Goal keepers
5 Defenders
5 Midfielders
3 Forwards
Each team can select a maximum of 3 players from any one Real Premier league team e.g. a fantasy team can only have 3 players from Chelsea or Manchester United in the squad.
MANAGING A SQUAD
From your pool of 15 selected players, you must select a team of 11 players to undertake each match week. This must be done before the match week deadline. All points for the match week would be scored with only these 11 players take into consideration.

However, if one (or more) players doesn’t feature in the match week, they can be automatically substituted by one of the 4 remaining players.

You can set your team up in any formation of your choosing, provided there is at least 1 goal keeper, 3 defenders and 1 forward always. Each match week, you can also select a captain and vice-captain from the “My team” page. The captain scores double the points the player is able to accrue in real life. If the captain doesn’t play, the vice-captain takes this mantle.
For each match week, a user is allowed 1 free alteration to the squad roster. A team can choose to “carry over” this free transfer into the next match week, however, you can only have a maximum of 2 free transfers at any given point through the season.

Each transfer above the limit, would attract a 4-point hit each match week. The sum of these ‘hits’ are subtracted from the total points in league play.

However, it is important to note that there must be consideration for the cost implication of each transfers, prices vary amongst players.
For the 2017/2018 season, there would be up to 4 chips available to every user:
Bench Boost: This enables your entire squad of 15 to score points for the match week. Can only be used once per season.

Triple Captain: This enables your selected captain for a match week to score triple his accrued points rather than the standard double multiple. Can only be used once per season.

Free Hit: This enables you to make unlimited transfers in a match week. However, the effect would only last for that single match week, and is particularly useful in the event that there is not a full complement of fixtures for the match week. Can only be used once per season.

Wildcard: This also enables you to make unlimited transfers in your team and is perfect for a complete overhaul of your squad. This is available twice in a season.
Every team automatically joins public league based on favourite clubs and country. However, you can create and join private leagues with friends, in both the classic or head to head format.
Classic format calculates all the points accrued and members of the league are ranked in a table.
Head to Head format pits teams against each other on a weekly basis, with 3 points awarded for each win, and a point for a draw.

Assists are awarded when a player provides the final pass (intentional or unintentional) before a goal is scored. If an opposing player touches the ball after the final pass before a goal is scored, significantly altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is awarded.

If a shot on goal is blocked by an opposition player, is saved by a goalkeeper or hits the woodwork, and a goal is scored from the rebound, then an assist is awarded.

If a player shoots or passes the ball and forces an opposing player to put the ball in his own net, then an assist is awarded.

Penalties and Free-Kicks
In the event of a penalty or free-kick, the player earning the penalty or free-kick is awarded an assist if a goal is directly scored, but not if he takes it himself, in which case no assist is given.

Finalizing Assists
Assist points awarded by Opta within Fantasy Premier League are calculated using additional stats which may differ from other websites. For example, some other sites would not show an assist where a player has won a penalty.

For the avoidance of doubt, points awarded in-game are subject to change up until one hour after the final whistle of the last match of any given day. Once the points have all been updated on that day, no further adjustments to points will be made.
