Hollywood hates killing cash cows. If your franchise is earning money, it’s likely going to get another movie. Shrek 2 was the highest grossing animated movie (domestically) for 12 years until that record was broken by Finding Dory this summer. All in all, five Shrek films have been released (if you include the spin-off Puss in Boots) grossing a combined $1.4 billion domestically, and $3.5 billion worldwide. The last film in the Shrek proper series was Shrek Forever After. That film became the lowest-grossing of the four Shrek movies domestically, though was still a huge success worldwide. Hence, there is obviously no surprise that Shrek 5 is coming!
While speaking with The Hollywood News, Trolls directors Walt Dohrn and Mike Mitchell talked about the new adventure for the big, green ogre, confirming McCullers involvement with the sequel. Mike Mitchell commented: “They’ve got a pretty good story. It’s being written by Michael McCullers who wrote all of the Austin Powers films. He came up with a really great idea that they’re exploring.â€
Walt Dohrn added: “There’s more story to tell there and we’re ready to help tell it for sure.â€
McCullers is a veteran of Saturday Night Live and penned Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Austin Powers in Goldmember for Mike Myers. He also wrote and directed Baby Mama, starring two other SNL alums Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and most recently worked on the screenplay for the animated Mr. Peabody & Sherman.
The announcement of McCullers as the writer is intriguing given his penchant for comedy. The Shrek films have always been at their best when bringing the humor, and with comedy legends like Myers and Eddie Murphy lending their voices, the laughs should keep on coming. With McCullers once again teaming with Myers, there may be hope yet that the franchise returns to form with its fifth go-round.
Dohrn and Mitchell aren’t directly involved with Shrek 5 yet, but Dohrn said the duo would “love” to be part of the fifth Shrek film.
At this time, no plot details have been revealed for Shrek 5. At one point, it was rumored to be a compete reboot of the Fairy tale series. Shrek Forever After, which found Shrek trapped in an alternate timeline after a deal with Rumpelstiltskin goes sour, was promoted by DreamWorks Animation as the final film in the series. It isn’t clear exactly how the saga would attempt to reboot itself. It’s clear that there will probably be more Shrek movies after this next one, so we probably won’t see it marketed as the ‘final’ movie a second time.
Shrek 5 is set to release in 2019, nine years after Shrek Forever After debuted in theaters. Trolls, meanwhile, will be released on November 4. Keep an eye out for more updates in the coming months.
